Texas Red® Peptide Labeling Drawbacks & Alternatives
Sulforhodamine 101 acid chloride (also called Texas Red®) is the most popular labeling reagent of sulfonyl chlorides. Unfortunately it is quite unstable in water, especially at the higher pH required for reactions with aliphatic amines, and reacts indiscriminately. In addition, the labeling efficiency is extremely low compared to succinimidyl esters. There are a few variations that have been developed, to overcome some of these issues.
California Red™ SE & SunRed™ SE have much higher labeling efficiency, improved stability, and brighter fluorescence than the corresponding Texas Red® conjugates for long peptides and oligonucleotides. Additionally, Tide Fluor™ 4 has all of these advantages as well as a longer shelf life.
