New, highly infectious COVID-19 variants have caused a wave of devastating new infections.  The Kappa strain, also known as B.1.617.1, and the Delta strain, also called B.1.617.2, are sublineages of what's been referred to as the Indian variant — B.1.617.  This strain arose in October 2020 and has since infected people in dozens of countries around the world.  These substrains, along with related Indian strain B.1.618,  have several key mutations in the Spike protein (L452R, E484Q, and E484K) that cause increased transmissibility, infectivity, and disease severity.   Only a few short weeks ago, as we were designing these new products, the Kappa strain appeared to be the dominant strain, but then was quickly eclipsed by the Delta strain in most countries.

BPS is always on the cutting edge of creating new research tools to study COVID-19, and we’re  excited to announce three new Indian variant Spike pseudoviruses.

Spike (B.1.618 Variant) Pseudotyped Lentivirus (Luc Reporter)

78205

Spike (B.1.617.1 (Kappa) Variant) Pseudotyped Lentivirus (Luc Reporter)

78204

Spike (B.1.617 (Delta/Kappa parental) Variant) Pseudotyped Lentivirus (Luc Reporter)

All three variants are available in two sizes: 100 ul and 2 x 500 ul.

The pseudoviruses can be used to study inhibition of both Spike:ACE2 binding and viral entry in a cellular context, using either our ACE2 or TMPRSS2-overexpressing cell lines.   Many of these variants have greater resistance to convalescent serum and neutralizing antibodies, so it’s especially important to study these variants for the development of new therapeutics and detection assays.  Of course you’ll also want to offer the researcher a copy of our coronavirus brochure to view our full portfolio of over 150 products for coronavirus research:  https://bpsbioscience.com/pub/media/pdf_booklets/generated/2_Coronavirus.pdf

We are also actively working on developing Spike variant proteins (monomers and trimers) for each of these, along with products for the Delta (B.1.617.2) strain and the brand new Delta plus substrain, which includes an additional mutation called K417N.  We plan to offer these in the next few weeks, most likely followed shortly by variant-specific assay kits.  Stay tuned for more exciting products from BPS Bioscience!
